Minimum investment, maximum capacity

BIOPAQ®RISE

BIOPAQ® RISE offers a more elegant architecture for high-rate anaerobic wastewater treatment. By moving biomass separation out of the main bioreactor and into an external standpipe, BIOPAQ® RISE helps plants increase loading, retain valuable granules, recover effective reactor capacity, and improve service access. The result is a practical modernization of older anaerobic designs for both retrofit and greenfield applications.

Discuss BIOPAQ® RISE in person

A modern architecture for higher loading rates

BIOPAQ® RISE introduces a compact external separation module that enhances anaerobic reactor performance through better granule retention and more effective use of reactor volume. It keeps the proven BIOPAQ process basis, but modernizes how three-phase separation is executed. For plants limited by biomass washout, space, or upgrade complexity, RISE creates a simpler and more serviceable path to higher performance.

                                Main benefits

  •                                         Higher treatment efficiency

  •                                         Stable reactor performance under fluctuating loads

  •                                         Improved biomass retention and biogas production

  •                                         Easier to service and clean, since separation module is independent from reactor

  •                                         Faster and cost-effective assembly with modular design using 3D-printed separators

BIOPAQ® RISE is Paques’ high-rate anaerobic wastewater treatment solution for improving granule retention, reactor stability and treatment capacity. By moving biomass separation outside the main reactor, it helps make better use of reactor volume, simplifies service access and supports retrofit projects for underperforming UASB and EGSB reactors.

Think outside the tank, and discover how BIOPAQ® RISE can help upgrade anaerobic wastewater treatment without a full rebuild.

What is so special about BIOPAQ® RISE?

Traditional high-rate anaerobic systems rely on internal three-phase separation that takes up space inside the reactor and can be difficult to service. BIOPAQ® RISE rethinks that arrangement. Its external 3D-printed separators are stacked inside a standpipe, allowing easier cleaning, simpler integration, and a more modular overall system. The biology remains proven. The architecture gets better.

                                Uniquely designed system module

BIOPAQ® RISE provides efficient three-phase separation of biogas, liquid, and solids. The external standpipe captures granules that may leave the bioreactor and redirects them back into the bioreactor, helping maintain biomass inventory, reactor stability, and long-term performance.

Discover how BIOPAQ® RISE breathes new life into underperforming anaerobic reactors. This innovative technology uses external biomass separators to enhance efficiency, increase biogas production, and minimize downtime, all without requiring major internal modifications. Easily retrofitted to existing UASB reactors, BIOPAQ® RISE offers a cost-effective way to unlock the full potential of your wastewater treatment system.

                        Why choose BIOPAQ® RISE?

State of the art high-rate anaerobic treatment.

Simple two-unit design:
one bioreactor for biogas production, one standpipe for biomass retention.

Increases loading rate despite limited space:
delivers strong separation performance with minimal footprint.

Improves operating efficiency:
reduces the risk of biomass washout and instability.

Allows independent cleaning and maintenance:
the external biomass retention system can be isolated and serviced when needed.

Offers a cost-effective upgrade solution:
improves existing reactors without the need for rebuild or new-tank investment.

Use BIOPAQ® RISE for retrofit - or choose it for a better new-build configuration

Granule retention is critical in anaerobic wastewater treatment. In older reactor concepts such as UASB reactors and EGSB, poor-performing internal separators may allow biomass washout while also consuming valuable treatment volume inside the reactor. BIOPAQ® RISE addresses both issues by externalizing separation. That makes it especially attractive for retrofitting underperforming reactors, but also relevant for new projects that demand a simpler, more serviceable architecture from day one. Even an existing tank can be transformed into an anaerobic reactor with the addition of a BIOPAQ® RISE standpipe.

                                High-load wastewater streams

BIOPAQ® RISE is particularly well suited for industries with high-load wastewater streams, including food and beverage , pulp and paper , and chemical manufacturing , as well as other industrial sectors where anaerobic performance, footprint, and uptime directly affect project economics.

UPGRADE your wastewater treatment system with BIOPAQ®RISE.

BIOPAQ® RISE offers a compact, cost-effective, and easier-to-install biomass retention concept with strong technical and commercial logic. It helps operators recover capacity, improve reliability, and modernize anaerobic treatment without defaulting to the complexity of traditional internal-separator designs.

Questions and answers

What is BIOPAQ® RISE?

BIOPAQ® RISE is a high-rate anaerobic wastewater treatment concept that uses external biomass separation to enable higher loading rates, improve granule retention, and make better use of reactor volume. Its core module is a standpipe housing 3D-printed internals that recover biomass that might otherwise be washed out with the effluent.

What does it do?

It separates treated effluent, biomass, and biogas in a way that helps retain valuable anaerobic granules, stabilize reactor performance, and support higher treatment capacity.

Why is this important?

Granule retention is essential for high-rate anaerobic wastewater treatment. When valuable biomass is lost, reactor efficiency and stability all suffer. BIOPAQ® RISE helps protect that biomass while creating a strong separation capacity on a small footprint.

What is unique about BIOPAQ® RISE and why does it matter?

Its uniqueness is architectural. Instead of relying on a bulky internal separator arrangement inside the main reactor, BIOPAQ® RISE externalizes biomass separation into a simpler standpipe module. That makes the system more elegant, simpler to assemble, easier to service, and more suitable for retrofit while preserving the proven biological basis of BIOPAQ technology.

Is BIOPAQ® RISE mainly for retrofit, or also for new build?

Retrofit is the  logical commercial application for underperforming reactors that need more capacity or better granule retention. But the RISE concept is also highly suitable for new-build projects that want a simpler and more serviceable configuration from the start.

How should a customer choose BIOPAQ® RISE versus a traditional internal-separator concept on a new build?

How should a customer choose BIOPAQ® RISE versus a traditional internal-separator concept on a new build? The choice depends on project priorities. BIOPAQ® RISE is especially attractive when simplicity, modularity, footprint, service access, and future upgrade flexibility matter. Traditional concepts may still be familiar to the market, but RISE offers a cleaner architecture with a stronger retrofit logic and a more modern service profile.

With BIOPAQ®RISE I need two units, a bioreactor and a standpipe with separators. How is this better than a single bioreactor with internal separators?

The advantages are related to design, installation and operation. Design is made cost-effective by separate bioreactor design (based on COD load) and standpipe design (based on flow rate). Installation is made safer and simpler (no installation of separators at height inside bioreactor).  Operation is more flexible and easier: external biomass retention system can be isolated and serviced when needed.
